Technical Frequently Asked Questions

GuardianCam is here to support you. We have found that the "Frequently Asked Questions" sections of our web site (including General and Technical) addresses more than 90% of all support issues. Please review the questions and answers on both the General and Technical FAQ sections. Q. I am getting a picture that looks like an oil painting or negative.

Most likely your color-depth is not set correctly. Open the Control Panel by clicking the Start Menu / Settings / Control Panel. Then double-click the “Display Properties” icon. Click on the “Settings” tab. Make sure your “Color Depth” is higher than 256 colors, for example, “High Color (16-bit) or “True Color (32-bit)” are acceptable settings. If you do not see these options, please obtain the latest version your video display driver or upgrade your display hardware.

Q. What are the minimum system requirements to watch the video?

Win98/ME/NT4/2000/XP
Netscape 4.5+
Internet Explorer 4.0+
AOL 5.0

Q. I'm using a Macintosh computer, why can't I watch the video?

Please try using Internet Explorer. At this time the GuardianCam system does not support Netscape on Macintosh computers.

Q. I'm using Windows 3.1 or WebTV, why can't I watch the video?

At this time GuardianCam does not support these platforms.

Q. How do I upgrade the version of my web browser?
The download is free from Microsoft, Netscape or AOL web sites. Please visit http://www.microsoft.com/ie, http://www.netscape.com, or http://www.aol.com to upgrade and follow the on screen instructions.

Q. How do I enable cookies?

To enable cookies, follow the instructions below for the browser version you are using.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x

  • Select "Internet Options" from the Tools menu.
  • Click on the "Security" tab.
  • Click "Custom Level" button.
  • Scroll down to the "Cookies" section.
  • To enable:
  • Set "Allow cookies that are stored on your computer" to "Enable".
  • Set "Allow per-session cookies" to "Enable".
  • Click "OK".

Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x

  • Select "Internet Options" from the View menu.
  • Click on the "Advanced" tab.
  • Scroll down to find "Cookies" within the "Security" section.
  • To enable:
  • Select "Always accept cookies".
  • Click "OK".

Netscape Communicator 4.x

  • Select "Preferences" from the Edit menu
  • Find the "Cookies" section in the "Advanced" category.
  • To enable:
  • Select "Accept all cookies" (or "Enable all cookies").
  • Click "OK".

Q. How do I enable Java and JavaScript in my browser?

To learn how to enable Java and JavaScript in various versions of Netscape and Internet Explorer, click the browser and version you are using:

Netscape 4.0x

  • From the Edit menu, select Preferences.
  • Click Advanced so that it is highlighted.
  • To enable Java, select the Enable Java check box.
  • To enable JavaScript, select the Enable JavaScript check box.

Netscape 4.5x, 4.6x, and 4.7x

  • From the Edit menu, select Preferences.
  • Click Advanced so that it is highlighted.
  • To enable Java, select the Enable Java check box.
  • To enable JavaScript, select the Enable JavaScript check box.
  • Select Enable JavaScript for Mail and News.

Internet Explorer 4

  • From the View menu, select Internet Options.
  • Click the Security tab.
  • Select the zone (such as Local Intranet) shown in the bottom right of your main browser window.
  • Click the Custom button.
  • Click Settings.
  • For Java, select High Safety (or Medium or Low) in the Java - Java permissions settings.
  • For JavaScript, select Enable in the Scripting - Active Scripting settings.

Internet Explorer 5 and 5.5

  • From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
  • Click the Security tab.
  • Select the zone (such as Local Intranet) shown in the bottom right of your main browser window.
  • Click the Custom Level button.
  • For Java, select High Safety (or Medium or Low) in Java - Java permissions settings.
  • For JavaScript, select Enable in the Scripting - Active Scripting settings.

Q. The video camera has been shifted away from the room.

The teachers sometimes do this if it is dress up time and do not want the children to be on camera at this time.

Q. Between 1-3pm, why is the video dark and blurry?

This is usually the time that the schools set aside for nap time

Q. Why does my picture slow down sometimes?

This will usually depend on the speed of your Internet connection.

Q. Can I record the video?

No.

Q. Why does it log me off after ten minutes?

You have been logged off for security reasons. This prevents anyone else from viewing your child via your account if your computer is left unattended for an extended period of time.
